Guide for Authors

General Considerations

Submitted articles must be original and innovative, based on original research in scientific, applied, and engineering fields—especially those with a focus on innovative areas in the biotechnology industry. Manuscripts should be written in Persian with an English abstract.

Manuscripts can only be submitted through the journal's website: http://mbbe.irost.ir, and may be submitted in one of the following formats:

  • Research paper
  • Review paper
  • Short paper

For review articles, the corresponding author must have published at least three articles in reputable scientific journals on the relevant topic.

Submitted manuscripts must be the result of the author(s)’ own research and must not be submitted simultaneously to another journal.

Scientific Scope of the Journal (Including but not limited to the following topics):

  1. Applications of microorganisms or their components in pharmaceutical, food, medical, environmental, agricultural, petrochemical, and mining industries at laboratory, pilot, or industrial scales.
  2. Bioinformatics, modeling, statistical, and computational studies to further understand bioprocesses and engineering in biotechnology.
  3. Research on the systematics and classification of microorganisms, microbial ecology, and microbe-host interactions.
  4. Nanobiotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbial metabolism.
  5. Genetic engineering, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology.

Required Files

To submit a manuscript, the following files must be prepared and uploaded simultaneously:

  • Main Article File
  • Graphical Abstract
  • Research Highlights
  • Author Commitment Form
  • Conflict of Interest Form

Main Article File: The manuscript should be prepared using MS Word, single-column format. The Persian sections should be written in B-Nazanin font size 12, and all English text should be in Times New Roman font size 10. All titles should be bold. The manuscript should be divided into the following sections, numbered 1 to 4: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion. Subsections should be numbered (e.g., 2-1). Units should follow the SI system and be written in English. All figures and tables should be presented at the end of the article, before the English abstract. Figure/table numbers and titles should appear in the main text, but the figures/tables themselves must be placed at the end.

Graphical Abstract (optional): This is a visual summary of the article’s content. It should be uploaded as a separate JPEG image file (minimum 500 KB). Any text in the image should be in English, using a large-size Times New Roman font. Using images from the internet or social media is prohibited. Authors must use original images from their own research.

Research Highlights: This file should be a separate, one-page MS Word file uploaded via the system. It must include 3–5 independent sentences that summarize the key research findings (each sentence no more than 25 words), provided in both Persian and English. English sentences should follow the Persian ones.

Author Commitment Form: The corresponding author must download this form from the journal's "Required Forms" section, complete and sign it, and upload the scanned version.

Conflict of Interest Form: The corresponding author must download this form from the journal’s "Required Forms" section, complete and sign it, and upload the scanned version.

Article Writing Guide

General Structure of the Article:

  • Title:
Should be as short and descriptive as possible. Center-aligned on the first page, bold font size 18.
  • Author Name(s):
Full name(s), center-aligned in bold font size 10. Author affiliations should be listed under the names, including academic rank, department, faculty/institute, university/research center, and city/province. Only the corresponding author’s email should be provided, marked with an asterisk (*), preferably an institutional email rather than Gmail or Yahoo. Different affiliations should be indicated using superscript numbers.
  • Abstract:
150–250 words, including introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion, and conclusion (font size 12).
  • Keywords:
5–7 keywords listed in order of importance, following the phrase “Keywords” in bold (font size 12).
  1. Introduction
Should summarize the background, significance, and application of the research topic, previous studies with references, and the purpose of the present research.
  2. Materials and Methods
Should describe materials used, equipment, experimental procedures, and basis of statistical analyses.
  3. Results and Discussion
Should include findings, explanations, and comparisons with existing literature. Results should be presented in only one format—either figure or table.
  4. Conclusion
Summarizes the main findings of the research briefly and clearly.
  • Conflict of Interest

Authors must clearly state any potential conflicts of interest, such as receiving payment or owning stock in an organization that might gain or lose based on the publication. If no conflicts exist, the following sentence must be added before the “Acknowledgments” section:
"No conflict of interest was declared by the authors."

  • Acknowledgments

Authors should acknowledge individuals or organizations who supported the research through funding, equipment, or scientific consultation. If financial support was provided, the contract number and date should be mentioned.

  • References

References should follow the APA (6th ed.; Numeric Sorting Style). References in the text must be numbered in the order they appear and cited within square brackets [ ]. All references should be listed at the end of the manuscript in order of appearance. All Persian references should be translated into English and followed by "[In Persian]". The DOI or DOR identifiers should be included whenever possible.

Important Notes for Authors:

Figures

  • Each figure must include a caption both in Persian (B-Nazanin 10 pt) and English (Times New Roman 8 pt), centered, and placed appropriately within the main text.
  • Figure numbers must be in bold and placed in parentheses.
  • All numerical values, axis labels (horizontal and vertical), and any embedded text within the figures or graphs must be in English to ensure comprehension by non-Persian readers.
  • Figures must be placed in order of appearance, each on a separate page, at the end of the manuscript and before the English abstract.
  • The minimum resolution must be 200 dpi, or at least 800×600 pixels. Articles not complying with this requirement will not be accepted for review.
  • Graphs must be editable or exportable to Excel format to allow for necessary modifications.

Given that most readers now access the electronic (PDF) version of the journal, it is recommended to use distinguishable and print-friendly colors when preparing figures.
If authors wish to have their figures printed in color in the hard copy version, associated printing costs will be borne by the authors.

Tables

  • The position of each table should be indicated in the main text by inserting its title in Persian (B-Nazanin 10 pt) and English (Times New Roman 8 pt).
  • Titles must be centered and include the table number in bold and parentheses.
  • All numbers, words, headings, subheadings, data entries, and footnotes must be in English, with left-to-right formatting.
  • Tables must be clear and fully understandable to non-Persian readers.
  • Complete tables should be presented in order, each on a separate page, following the figures and before the English abstract.

English Abstract

To facilitate indexing in reputable international databases, submission of an English abstract is mandatory.
This section must include:

  • Title of the article
  • Author name(s) and affiliation(s)
  • Structured abstract containing:
    • Introduction
    • Materials and Methods
    • Results and Discussion
    • Conclusions
    • Keywords (English equivalents of the Persian keywords)

The abstract should not exceed 250 words and must appear at the end of the main manuscript file.

Final Note:

The corresponding author is responsible for collaborating with the journal editorial team on matters such as preparing or revising figures and tables, editorial corrections, and ensuring timely submission of all required files.
Failure to fulfill these responsibilities may result in the article being withdrawn from the review and publication process.
