The rising prevalence of infectious and chronic diseases in recent decades has heightened the need for developing safe, effective, and cost-efficient vaccines. In this context, the use of microalgae as a novel platform for producing oral vaccines has garnered significant attention. This review article aims to evaluate the potential of microalgae in the production of recombinant vaccines. In this study, articles published in scientific databases in recent years were reviewed, and information related to gene expression systems, types of vaccines produced in microalgae, and the resulting immune responses was extracted and analyzed. The findings indicate that microalgae, such as *Chlamydomonas reinhardtii*, are capable of effectively expressing antigens in nuclear and chloroplast genomes. Vaccines produced against pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus*, HPV, Zika, influenza, malaria parasites, and the causative agent of Chagas disease have shown promising results in animal models. Additionally, some studies have reported successful use of microalgae in producing antihypertensive peptides and immunogens against breast cancer. The results of this review suggest that microalgae, particularly as edible biofactories, hold significant potential for producing next-generation vaccines and could serve as a sustainable, low-cost alternative to conventional expression systems.
