English

The petrochemical industry, while playing a pivotal role in economic development, produces vast quantities of toxic wastewater that pose serious environmental threats. Conventional treatment technologies frequently prove inefficient because of their high energy demand and limited ability to remove complex pollutants. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), a class of bio‑electrochemical systems, offer a sustainable alternative, enabling simultaneous wastewater remediation and electricity generation through microbial metabolism. This review analyses the architecture and operating principles of MFCs and synthesizes key studies on their application to petrochemical wastewater treatment. Case studies report effective removal of chemical oxygen demand, phenol, and other contaminants, with power densities reaching up to 850 mW.m-2. The effects of substrate concentration, salinity, toxic compounds, electrode materials, and reactor design on MFC performance are examined in detail. Despite these promising findings, challenges such as limited scalability, performance fluctuations, and sensitivity to wastewater composition persist. Continued progress will require research focused on advanced materials, system optimization, and microbial community engineering to prepare MFC technology for industrial‑scale adoption in the petrochemical sector.
